The Lip Balm Frustration (You Know This Feeling)
Hey friends! Stacie here. Let me guess your winter morning routine:
- Wake up with dry, cracked lips
- Apply lip balm
- Lips feel better for about 20 minutes
- Dry again
- Apply more lip balm
- Repeat all day long
Sound familiar?
I lived this cycle for YEARS. Tube of lip balm in my pocket, one in my purse, one on my nightstand, one in the car. Reapplying constantly. Lips never actually getting better.
Then I learned something that changed everything: Lip balm alone isn’t enough.
Why Your Lips Get So Dry (Especially in Central PA Winters)
Before I explain the solution, let’s talk about why this happens. Understanding the problem makes the fix make sense.
Your lips are different from the rest of your skin:
- No oil glands - Unlike the skin on your face or hands, your lips don’t produce their own natural oils. Zero. They have no built-in moisture system.
- Thin skin - Lip skin is much thinner than other skin, so moisture escapes faster.
- Constant exposure - You can’t exactly cover your lips with a scarf all day (though I’ve tried during those brutal January walks from the parking lot to the craft show venue!).
Add Central PA winter to that:
- Dry indoor heat running constantly
- Cold wind outside
- Low humidity everywhere
- Hot drinks (which feel good but actually dry lips out more)
No wonder we’re all reaching for lip balm every 30 minutes!
Here’s the key insight: Your lips need OUTSIDE help to stay moisturized. Unlike your face (where we can use oils that work WITH your skin’s natural oils - see our guide to choosing soap for your skin type), your lips have nothing to work with. They need products that PROVIDE the moisture barrier your lips can’t create themselves.
The Problem with “Just Lip Balm”
Here’s what I finally realized after years of frustration:
Lip balm is designed to SEAL moisture in. It creates a protective barrier on your lips.
But here’s the catch: If you’re applying lip balm over dry, flaky, cracked skin, you’re just sealing in the problem.
Think about it. When your lips are chapped, they have a layer of dead, flaky skin on top. When you apply lip balm:
- It sits on top of that dead skin
- It can’t reach the healthy skin underneath
- The flaky layer prevents proper absorption
- You feel temporary relief, but the cycle continues
This is why you keep reapplying and nothing ever improves.
The Game-Changer: Lip Scrub
Lip scrub is exactly what it sounds like - a gentle exfoliant specifically designed for your lips.
What it does:
- Removes the dead, flaky skin
- Reveals the soft, healthy lip underneath
- Creates a smooth surface for lip balm to actually work
- Promotes healthy lip skin turnover
What’s in ours:
- Sugar - Gentle exfoliant that dissolves as you use it (no harsh microbeads!)
- Coconut Oil - Our go-to moisturizing oil (see our ingredients page for why we love it)
- Shea Butter - Deep, lasting moisture that doesn’t feel greasy
- Natural Flavors - Because your lips should taste good!
It’s simple. But it makes ALL the difference.
The 2-Step Lip Care Routine That Actually Works
After years of trial and error, here’s what I do now. Takes about 60 seconds total.
Step 1: Lip Scrub (2-3 times per week)
- Apply a small amount of lip scrub to your lips
- Gently rub in small circles for about 30 seconds
- Lick it off (it tastes good!) or wipe with a damp cloth
- Your lips should feel smooth and soft
When to do it:
- Before bed (so lip balm can work overnight)
- Before applying lipstick (for smoother application)
- Whenever your lips feel flaky or rough
Don’t overdo it: 2-3 times per week is plenty. Over-exfoliating can irritate your lips.
Step 2: Lip Balm (daily, as needed)
After scrubbing, NOW apply your lip balm. Here’s the difference:
- The balm can actually reach your healthy lip skin
- It absorbs better
- The protective seal actually works
- You won’t need to reapply as often
My routine: I scrub my lips 2-3 times per week (usually at night), then apply lip balm. In between, I just use lip balm as needed - but I find I need it way less often.
Our Lip Products (Made in Enola!)
We make both lip scrub and lip balm right here in our Enola kitchen.
Lip Scrub ($6)
Sugar-based, gentle enough for sensitive lips, and actually tastes good. Current flavors:
- Bubblegum - Sweet, nostalgic, fun
- Raspberry Sherbet - Fruity and fresh
- Hunka Hunka Burning Lip Scrub - Our playful take with a hint of cinnamon warmth
One jar lasts months because you only need a tiny bit each time.
Lip Balm ($4)
After you scrub, seal in the moisture with our natural lip balms:
- Bubblegum - Matches our scrub perfectly!
- Lemon Pucker - Bright, citrusy, refreshing
What’s inside:
- Beeswax - Creates that protective barrier to lock moisture in (learn more on our ingredients page)
- Shea Butter - The same deep-moisturizing butter we use in our lotion bars
- Coconut Oil - Nourishing and absorbs beautifully
- Natural Flavor Oils - For that delicious taste
No petroleum, no weird chemicals. Just natural oils and butters that actually nourish your lips. The same standard applies here as all our products: if I wouldn’t put it on my grandson, it doesn’t go in our products.
Why These Ingredients Matter for Your Lips
I’m a bit obsessed with ingredients (check out our full ingredients page if you want the deep dive!). Here’s why the ones in our lip products specifically work for lips:
Beeswax - Your lips have no oil glands, remember? Beeswax creates a protective barrier that locks moisture in without suffocating your skin. It’s what makes the difference between lip balm that works and lip balm you have to reapply every 20 minutes.
Shea Butter - This is my desert-island ingredient. Rich in vitamins A and E, it moisturizes deeply without feeling heavy. For lips, it absorbs quickly and actually repairs dry, cracked skin over time.
Coconut Oil - Lightweight, nourishing, and antimicrobial. It helps keep your lip products fresh longer AND gives your lips that soft, hydrated feeling.
Sugar (in scrubs) - Unlike salt (too harsh for lips!) or plastic microbeads (bad for the environment), sugar dissolves gently as you use it. It exfoliates without tearing at delicate lip skin.
What we DON’T use: Petroleum, parabens, artificial dyes, or synthetic preservatives. Same standard as everything we make in our Enola kitchen.
FAQ: Real Questions About Lip Care
“Can I use regular sugar as a lip scrub?”
Technically yes, but regular sugar crystals are bigger and rougher. Lip scrubs are specifically formulated with finer sugar and oils so you get exfoliation without irritation. (Learned this the hard way when I tried DIY-ing with kitchen sugar and ended up with raw lips!)
“How is lip scrub different from face scrub?”
Face scrub is for larger skin areas and often has ingredients that shouldn’t be ingested. Lip scrub is designed to be safe if you accidentally swallow some (because you will - it goes on your lips!). Plus, lip scrub flavors actually taste good.
“Do I need lip scrub if I don’t have chapped lips?”
Even if your lips aren’t severely chapped, you probably have some dead skin buildup. Using lip scrub occasionally keeps your lips soft and helps lip products (including lipstick!) go on smoother.
“Can kids use lip scrub?”
Yes! Our lip scrubs are safe for kids. It’s actually a great way to teach them about taking care of their skin. Just supervise younger kids so they don’t eat the whole jar (it’s tempting - it tastes good!).
“How long does a jar of lip scrub last?”
A long time! You only need a tiny amount each use. One jar typically lasts 2-3 months even with regular use.
The Winter Lip Survival Kit
If you’re dealing with seriously dry winter lips, here’s what I recommend:
(And if your HANDS are just as dry as your lips, check out our lotion bars - they use the same beeswax + shea butter combo and are a winter lifesaver!)
The basics:
- 1 Lip Scrub (any flavor)
- 1 Lip Balm (any flavor)
The routine:
- Scrub 2-3x per week, especially before bed
- Apply lip balm immediately after scrubbing
- Reapply lip balm as needed during the day
- Stay hydrated (I know, I know - everyone says this, but it really helps!)
Extra tips:
- Don’t lick your lips (saliva evaporates and makes dryness worse)
- Apply lip balm before going outside in the cold
- Keep a lip balm by your bed for overnight moisture
