You Made It Through Winter. Your Skin Has Questions.
Hey friends! Stacie here.
If your skin could talk right now, I think it would say something like: “Okay, what are we doing now?”
Because here in Central PA, the shift from February into March is… confusing. One day it’s 22 degrees and your hands are cracking. The next it’s pushing 55 and the windows are open and everything feels different. Your skin is right there in the middle of it, trying to figure out what you need.
And here’s the thing nobody really talks about: spring can actually be harder on your skin than winter if you don’t adjust your routine.
Not harder in the “cracked knuckles and static electricity” way. Harder in the “why am I suddenly breaking out” or “why does my moisturizer feel so heavy all of a sudden” way.
I’ve been making skincare products right here in our home for years now, and every spring I hear the same questions about making the transition. So here’s what actually works.
Why Spring Is a Real Adjustment for Your Skin
Winter skin is in survival mode. The air is dry, the heat is running constantly, and your skin is working overtime just to stay comfortable. So you load up. Thicker lotions. More frequent application. Every bit of moisture you can get.
Then spring arrives and everything shifts:
Humidity rises. When the air holds more moisture, your skin naturally holds onto more moisture too. Products that felt perfect in January can suddenly feel heavy or even start to clog pores.
Temperature swings. March and April in Central PA are wild — cold mornings, warm afternoons, back to cold again. That back-and-forth stresses your skin barrier and can leave skin looking a little dull and uneven.
You go outside more. More time outdoors means more wind exposure, more UV exposure (yes, even on cloudy spring days), and more contact with seasonal allergens that can leave skin feeling irritated and sensitive.
Your skin is shedding winter buildup. All that dry winter skin? It’s ready to go. But if you don’t help it along, it just sits there and makes everything look patchy.
None of this is a crisis. It just means your routine needs a small adjustment. And honestly? The spring routine is simpler than winter. Less product, not more.
The Spring Reset: Three Simple Steps
Step 1: Exfoliate First
Before you do anything else, your skin needs to shed the winter layer.
I’m not talking about anything harsh or complicated. A simple, gentle exfoliation 2-3 times a week is all it takes.
For your body, a gentle sugar scrub 2-3 times a week is the right tool here — it lifts the dead winter skin without stripping what’s underneath. For your lips (which build up dry, flaky skin all winter), our Lip Scrub is the first thing I reach for in spring. A couple of scrubs and your lips will feel completely different — soft and ready to actually absorb the moisturizer you put on after.
This is the step most people skip, and it’s the reason the rest of your routine stops working. Fresh spring skin underneath cannot get moisture through a layer of dry winter buildup.
Step 2: Lighten Your Moisturizer Application
Here’s where people get confused: I’m NOT saying stop moisturizing. I’m saying you probably need less of it, and you might want to apply it differently.
In winter, the tendency is to apply Lotion Bars generously and frequently — every morning and evening, sometimes in between. Because the air is pulling moisture out all day long and you have to keep replenishing.
In spring, the same lotion bars work beautifully — but used more like a light finishing touch. After a shower, when skin is still slightly damp, press the bar in once and that’s usually enough for the day. The slightly higher humidity means your skin does more of the work on its own. You can find our Solid Lotion Bars at Carlisle Creative Vibes if you want to try one or stock up for spring.
Watch for the signs your routine is too heavy for spring:
- Skin feels congested or looks dull even after washing
- Products feel like they’re sitting on top instead of absorbing
- Unusual breakouts on your back, shoulders, or chest
- A “sticky” feeling in warm weather
If you notice any of those, try cutting back on the amount you’re using before you assume anything is wrong with your skin or your products.
Step 3: Keep the Lip Care Going (Don’t Stop This One)
I know spring feels like lips should be fine. But wind is actually harder on lips than cold, dry air — because wind actively pulls moisture away faster. And outdoor time in spring means more exposure, not less.
A good spring lip routine: Lip Scrub 2-3 times a week (still, always), and lip balm as needed throughout the day. The difference from winter is that you won’t be reaching for lip balm every 30 minutes anymore — once or twice a day is usually enough once you’ve cleared the dry winter layer.
If you want the full breakdown on why the scrub-and-balm combo works so well, I wrote about it in The Busy Mom’s Guide to Lip Care — that post explains the “why” in more detail.
A Spring Routine That Works
“Here’s a routine” posts can feel overwhelming, so here’s a simple framework for your spring reset. Keep it short, keep it easy.
Morning:
- Wash face with our Natural Soap
- While still slightly damp, quick pass of the lotion bar on arms and legs (10 seconds, not a production)
- Lip balm before you head out the door
Evening (2-3 times a week):
- Quick lip scrub in the shower
- Lip balm after
- Lotion bar on any dry spots (elbows, heels — still a bit stubborn in March)
That’s it.
Spring should feel like your routine getting easier, not harder. If you’re doing more work in April than you were in January, something’s off.
A Note on “Natural” in Spring
One thing I hear sometimes in spring: “I switched to a lighter drugstore lotion and I’m not sure if I still need your products.”
My honest answer? Do what works for your skin.
What I will say is that our lotion bars and body butter are made with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax — things that nourish and soften skin, absorb well, and don’t leave a greasy residue. They work with your skin’s natural function rather than just coating the surface.
That means LESS product in spring, not different products. The same lotion bar that required heavy application in January needs just a light touch in March. That’s not a failure of the product — that’s your skin doing its job better as conditions improve.
FAQ: Spring Skin Questions I Actually Get
“My skin looks dull in spring even though I’m moisturizing — what’s going on?”
Almost always, this is winter skin buildup that hasn’t exfoliated away yet. Gentle exfoliation with something like a gentle sugar scrub or exfoliating cloth will usually clear this up within a week.
“I used lotion bars all winter and now my skin feels congested. Did I do something wrong?”
Nothing wrong at all. You just need to apply less. Try skipping one application and see how your skin responds. Spring skin needs support, not rescue.
“Do I need different lip products in spring?”
Same products, slightly different frequency. Keep using your lip scrub — spring wind still dries lips out. Just use your balm a little less often once your lips are in good shape.
“My hands were cracked all winter but they’re finally better. Do I still need lotion?”
Yes, but lighter application. Your hands still benefit from daily moisture — especially after washing — but you won’t need the heavy layer you applied in January. A quick swipe with a lotion bar after washing your hands is usually enough.
The Short Version (If You Made It This Far)
Spring skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Three things:
- Exfoliate to clear the winter layer (sugar scrub for body, lip scrub for lips)
- Lighten up on how much moisturizer you’re applying (same products, less of them)
- Keep the lip care going — spring wind is real
Your skin is honestly ready to feel good right now. It just needs a small nudge in the right direction.
